Hi, I’m Darby Jackson, and I used to be stuck in a chronic state of fight or flight. On the outside, I had everything a woman is supposed to want. A flashy startup, home near the ocean, a handsome husband and successful business.

But on the inside, I felt anxious, frantic, exhausted, out-of-control, and depressed. I could feel my body fill with cortisol and stress at even the smallest dysregulation. My body was registering states of fear and threat even when I saw safe.

I had a chronically dysregulated nervous system.

Then, in 2020, I found Polyvagal Theory

According to PVT, when our nervous system works as intended, it moves easily from a state of calm, into stress and then back again. Experiences of stress and brief anxiety are important for us as humans, but we shouldn’t be stuck in these states for long periods of time. When these stressors happen over a long time and become repeated events, or when we experience trauma, this can lead to a chronic state that makes us feel stuck, so we end up living in chronic states of fight or flight, which can be debilitating. This is what I was feeling!

Then, when a nervous system is chronically dysregulated, it shifts its focus from things that make us happy, flexible, resilient and socially engaged, to constantly fighting perceivable threats that may no longer be present. Healthy regulated nervous systems can end cycles that continue to reinforce our greatest challenges.

With 8+ years in the health and wellness space, I have experienced firsthand the impact of toning the vagus nerve and polyvagal theory on clients. More than that, I have seen how a compromised nervous system can have detrimental effects on the brain, body and spirit. My mission is to work with clients to help them re-tune their nervous system and experience the freedom that comes with feeling safe in their bodies again.
